RENO, Nev. (KOLO) - The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office says it is seeing an increase in thefts from unsecured and standalone mailboxes.

They say they have received several reports of people placing outgoing checks in their mailboxes, only for thieves to remove the checks and alter or deposit them for their own gain.

The WCSO recommends securing your mailbox or take outgoing mail directly to the post office.
