It was a long shot at finding freedom and rebuilding a life after a quarter century of imprisonment.

Dawn Jackson had to take it.

More than five years ago, Jackson called her son Michael from the Mountain View Correctional Facility, where she was incarcerated, to ask him to find an address.

“He thought I was crazy, at first,” she said.

Michael ended up finding the address. And his mother — who had been serving a 30-year sentence for murdering her step-grandfather who had sexually abused her for years — started writing letters.

“Writing is something I do from the heart,” Jackson said. “So, I sat down and poured everything into a letter — and then another and another.”
