A progressive lawyer brutally mocked the GOP on Tuesday for its hypocrisy over crime in Washington, D.C.
Marc Elias, founder of Democracy Docket, joined progressive YouTuber Brian Tyler Cohen on "Democracy Watch" to discuss Trump's move to federalize law enforcement in D.C and the efforts by the Texas GOP to redraw their election maps. Cohen remarked that it seemed like the Republicans are trying to use the powers of government against their political opponents, a move they accused Democrats of doing when they prosecuted President Donald Trump for trying to overturn the 2020 election.
"The hypocrisy within the Republican Party is just unbelievable," Elias said. "These are the same people who claim they are afraid of walking outside on the streets of [D.C.]"
"Some tough guy, alpha males these are!" Elias continued.
Trump has used claims of rising crime to justify sending federal troops into D.C. to act as local law enforcement. On Tuesday, it was reported that more than 1,000 agents roamed the streets of D.C. and made only 23 arrests.
Republicans in Congress have tried to back up Trump's claims with anecdotal evidence that they feel scared to walk around the District.
However, federal data shows that crime rates reached 30-year lows in 2024, a fact that FBI Director Kash Patel reiterated during Trump's press conference, where he announced the federalization of D.C.'s police force.
"I walk outside on the streets of D.C. and find it safe enough," Elias said.
