SPENCER, Iowa (KTIV) - In the face of last summer’s devastating floods, the people of Spencer, Iowa, stood together with compassion and resilience. That community spirit has been recognized.

“It is for the 11,376 citizens who reside in Spencer,” said mayor Steve Bomgaars.

Iowa’s Character Counts Program recently names Spencer as “community of the year” for the exemplary character its residents displayed during, and in the aftermath of historic flooding that hit the community last summer.

“Caring for others, neighbors caring for other neighbors, community members coming forth, community groups, churches, service groups, everybody coming together,” reminisced Bomgaars.
