FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - Tuesday evening, city council members voted 6-3 in favor of approving a rate increase that will cause bills to go around a dollar per year, for five years.

A large part of the City Utilities presentation to council was explaining why the rate increase was needed.

According to Kumar Menon, the director of City Utilities, it is due to poor work from decades ago.

“We are paying for the lack of work that was done 60, 50, 40 years ago, and we are now playing catch-up,” says Menon.

Councilman Geoff Paddock was one of the six in favor and said this is a step in the right direction.

“Everything we are doing is to not only provide clean, safe, and tasting drinking water, but also to deal more efficiently and environmentally with our solid waste,” said Paddock.
