KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- We’re hearing for the first time from the heartbroken family of a man shot and killed by police in Kansas City, Kansas, late last week.

The deadly incident happened near North 82nd Terrace and State Avenue.

According to investigators, 24-year-old Paul Beasley Jr. entered a store with a gun in hand and demanded the cashier call 911. When the first officer arrived, Beasley reportedly confronted them, prompting the officer to retreat outside and Beasley following.

That’s when, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation (KBI) says, five officers opened fire, hitting and killing Beasley.

But according to his family, there’s a critical piece of this story that must not be overlooked. Beasley had tried to get mental health care just hours before the shooting.
