WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Michael McVay was drafted into the army in 1966 and served as an infantryman in Vietnam. While he is proud of serving his country, he didn't like what he was doing over there.

"Our mission was to seek, search, and destroy, and that was something that I had a problem with," he said.

McVay says he felt for the Vietnamese citizens caught in the crossfire and was also saddened by the army's use of Agent Orange.

"We go home and it's still there, and it's there for lots of years, and that's too bad," he said.

McVay also earned two Purple Hearts fighting in Vietnam. The first battle wound involved him getting shot in the arm, but it was nothing compared to his encounter with a land mine.

"It was strong and I was up, 10, 15 feet in the air," he said.
