MANCHESTER, N.H. —

President Donald Trump announced Monday that he was placing the Metropolitan Police Department in Washington, D.C., under direct federal control.

By midday Tuesday, the White House said 850 additional law enforcement officers were on the ground, leading to more than 20 arrests overnight.

"Last night these arrest consisted of homicide, firearms offenses, possession with intent to distribute narcotics, fare evasion, lewd acts," White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

Sen. Jeanne Shaheen urged caution, saying that White House takeovers of local police are not a long-term solution.
