MONROE, La. (KNOE) - The Monroe City Council voted 3-2 to sue the state on Tuesday, Aug. 12.

At issue is a law pursued by the mayor that allows the governor to appoint a fire chief if the position has been vacant a year.

For more than a year, Monroe’s Fire Department has operated without a permanent fire chief, creating frustration among community members and city officials alike. The prolonged vacancy and recent involvement of Governor Jeff Landry in the appointment process have sparked heated debate at recent city council meetings.

During a recent meeting, residents expressed their concerns about the lack of fire department leadership and the state’s growing role in local appointments.
