GREEN BAY — Kickoff for last Saturday night’s preseason opener was still a few hours away, and the National Weather Service’s radar was showing a line of powerful thunderstorms tracking toward Lambeau Field.
As he made his way to his seat high above the field, Brian Gutekunst couldn’t help but hear the voice of the late Ted Thompson, his mentor and predecessor as the Green Bay Packers general manager.
Gutekunst’s gameday seat is still in the same perch as it was when he was one of Thompson’s top personnel lieutenants, and he hasn’t forgotten how Thompson used to view the risks associated with the annual summertime don’t-count-in-the-standings games.
