Spain’s heatwave alert has been extended for nearly another week as the country continues to bake in scorching temperatures.

Forecasters from Aemet, Spain’s national weather agency, predict temperatures will continue to reach 40C in Spain on Wednesday as some parts could see highs of 42C.

The current heatwave began on Sunday, August 3, caused by a mass of dry, warm air moving over the country, combined with typical summer sunshine “causing temperatures to be higher than usual for this time of year”.

Amber and yellow heat warnings have been issued for swathes of the country, including most of the south and the north east. Yellow warnings for heat are also in force for Majorca, Ibiza and Formentera. There are also warnings in force for thunderstorms.
