Matt Mellown was asked what he learned about himself during his first year as a head coach at Carroll after serving as a successful offensive coordinator at four different high schools.
“I learned that it doesn’t really matter what you know,” Mellown said. “There are so many more factors that go into winning football games than just being a good coach or having good coaches. I learned that I take losing really, really hard. I also learned that there are things more important than football.
“I had multiple opportunities to run away from it and just say, ‘Hey, we went 1-9. I can go somewhere else and take another job and be a coordinator again, or whatever.’ But I didn’t want to run away from the hard … because there are always going to be hard things.
