August 13, 1859 - Abe Lincoln gazed at Omaha from Iowa side.
Though the Capitol city’s namesake, President Abraham Lincoln never set foot in Nebraska. He came close on Aug. 13, 1859 when while campaigning for president in Council Bluffs, Iowa he noted Omaha’s presence across the Missouri.
A few years later Lincoln would designate Omaha as the starting point for the continuation of the transcontinental railroad.
