Fire crews remained on scene Wednesday morning in Lawrence, Massachusetts, more than 12 hours after flames tore through five buildings, destroying two of them.

Smoke continued billowing into the sky this morning on Lowell Street, where two apartment buildings are likely a total loss following Tuesday night's fire.

Everyone managed to escape the buildings safely, but two firefighters were being treated for heat exhaustion, officials said.

People all over the neighborhood could see the smoke and flames after the blaze broke out around 6 p.m., including a neighbor who knew people inside and described the frantic moments trying to find them.
