With Ramón Laureano and Ryan O’Hearn in the fold, the Padres suddenly have more left fielders than they need.
And they still have Tirso Ornelas developing at Triple-A El Paso.
Ornelas homered twice on Tuesday, leading Triple-A El Paso to a 9-7 win at Reno.
The blasts pushed Ornelas’ total to five in this challenging season. He made his MLB debut in April, but he was just 1-for-14 with an RBI, two walks and two strikeouts in seven games and he went on to miss nearly two months with a mild case of plantar fasciitis.
Ornelas went 0-for-5 in his return on Friday, 1-for-4 on Sunday and on Tuesday drove in four runs on his two blasts.
Ornelas is hitting .291/.375/.429 with 34 RBIs in 50 games. He hit .297/.367/.497 with 23 homers and 89 RBIs in 128 games last year at Triple-A El Pas
