MOUNT PLEASANT — Future redevelopment plans for Mount Pleasant Towne Centre are dead for now as property owners failed to secure the necessary votes to move forward.
The denial is a blow to Baltimore-based Continental Realty Corp., a company that has sought for four years to get town officials on board to amend the development agreement originally approved in the late 1990s. Continental wants to add a hotel, hundreds of housing units, more parking garages and more greenspaces to the property on North Highway 17 near the Isle of Palms Connector.
Following more than an hour of public comments Aug. 12, spanning opposing residents and Belk employees to representatives from The Beach Co. and Continental, town council voted 7-1 to deny the plans. Howard Chapman cast the outlier vote.
