CHARLESTON — Democratic candidate for governor and prominent Charleston attorney Mullins McLeod has been advised by the party to drop out of the race.
The party's call for him to exit came after The Post and Courier published a news account and video Aug. 12 showing him acting erratically in a profanity-laden rant following his May arrest at the Charleston Battery.
State party leadership spoke with McLeod by phone Aug. 13 to discuss his future and to encourage him to drop out, party sources said.
He was apparently not heeding the advice, one source said.
“After reviewing the transcript of dash cam footage from his recent arrest, it is clear that Mr. McLeod is navigating profound challenges and should focus on his emotional and mental well-being instead of a campaign for governor,” s
