Highway Code rule could see you fined for sleeping in the car

Drivers are being warned about a sleep rule that could lead to serious penalties. The consequences could include a fine of up to £2,500, 10 penalty points on your driving licence, or even imprisonment.

The law means you could face repercussions for sleeping in your vehicle while intoxicated. This regulation, which forms part of the Road Traffic Act and Highway Code, states that you could face prosecution if you are under the influence in your motor vehicle, irrespective of what you're doing.

Even if you're sleeping in the car, you could still be penalised for being "in control" of a vehicle whilst over the limit, My London reports. Being too intoxicated and sleeping in your vehicle comes under the Road Traffic Act 1988.
