CHESAPEAKE, Va. — Hurricane season in Hampton Roads doesn’t just bring the risk of flooding; it can also fuel a surge in mosquito activity.

In Chesapeake, the Mosquito Control Commission says late summer is their busiest time of year, and they’re working to keep those numbers down to protect public health.

Director Lisa Wagenbrenner says the team uses integrated pest management strategies to stay ahead of the problem. “We take a proactive approach, we use source reduction, surveillance, trapping mosquitoes, and testing those mosquitoes for diseases,” Wagenbrenner explained.
