OPELIKA, Ala. (WTVM) - Opelika police are investigating a deadly multiple-vehicle crash that occurred on Interstate 85 Tuesday night.

According to officials, a 28-year-old female was pronounced dead on the scene when the Kia SUV she was driving hit the back of a semi truck.

Police responded to the scene on I-85 South near exit 57 around 11:39 p.m. Tuesday. They found two passenger cars and a semi truck in the road.

Initial investigation revealed that a Honda passenger car hit a metal mattress spring in the road, leading it to begin sparking, according to officials. Following this, police said the driver of the semi truck stopped in the roadway as the driver of the Honda attempted to remove the mattress spring from the road.

Then, police said the Kia SUV hit the back of the semi-truck.
