After operating without a proper permit for more than seven years, New York State authorities have told Buffalo Biodiesel it may need to stop operations at its main facility in Tonawanda.

The company employs around 150 people, whose jobs would be in jeopardy if the company must close for good.

The Department of Environmental Conservation sent Buffalo Biodiesel a letter on July 30 requiring it to “cease receiving solid waste” as of Aug. 29 and dispose of any solid waste onsite within 60 days of that date, according to the letter obtained by The Buffalo News.

Buffalo Biodiesel executives said the move by the state regulator could cripple their business, but acknowledged the company’s role in the problem.
