LUMBERTON — A project to bring Automatic Metering Infrastructure (AMI) to the City of Lumberton has been in the works for a decade. Now, the city is set to begin installation of those automatic meters.

City Council approved a project contract with Aclara during its monthly meeting on Aug. 4, and the city closed on a financing deal to pay for the project late last week.

That paves the way for the city to begin purchasing the meters, with installation expected to take about one year.

AMI will allow for water and meter reading to be performed remotely, eliminating the human error component from the process. Not only will the city be able to read the meters remotely, but residents will be able to track usage daily as well.
