AI raises doubts online: How do you tell what's real?

MICHIGAN, USA — With the rise of artificial intelligence, a common question social media users might have while scrolling might be, “Is this real?”

AI-generated images and videos have been circulating on social media. Many are going viral because it’s getting increasingly difficult to tell if posts are legitimate.

One example in recent weeks was a video of bunnies jumping on a trampoline. The post claims the footage was captured on a home surveillance camera. However, a user pointed out that two bunnies merged into one, an error made by AI.

Len O’Kelly, Director of the School of Communications at Grand Valley State University, said AI has a huge hand in spreading misinformation.

“You know, if you look very closely, there are little mistakes,” O’Kelly said. “I saw one recently. Somebody
