COLUMBIA, S.C. (WCSC) - The South Carolina State Grand Jury has issued a 10-count indictment regarding allegations of public corruption by a former County Clerk of Court.
Sharon Staggers faces charges of misconduct in office and multiple counts of embezzlement, according to court documents.
The indictment alleges that Staggers embezzled a total of approximately $119,499.06 of state funds by causing funds to be paid to her as part of her salary as an elected official.
Elected officials in Williamsburg County are determined by the county council and the majority of the funds were Title IV-D funds, which are meant to enhance child support services, Attorney General spokesman Robert Kittle said.
