As he continues to prepare for his professional debut, local boxer Danny Chávez keeps winning amateur bouts and bringing accolades to Yuma.

Last Saturday, Chávez competed in the Tucson Boxing Showdown, where he claimed the championship trophy by defeating New Mexico’s Santos Sánchez for the 122-pound title.

The Yuma Fight Academy (YFA) boxer returned to the ring following his participation in the Junior Olympics in June and the International Open in April, reaching the final stages in both tournaments.

In Tucson, 17-year-old Chávez won by unanimous decision over New Mexico champion Santos Sánchez in the 122-pound division.

“Danny looked really good–he dominated the fight and landed some great shots. He had the chance to stop his opponent but let it go,” said YFA coach Gary Diaz.
