Gananoque council has decided not to pursue a bylaw regulating private security cameras, at least for now, after a staff report warned such rules may be impractical and largely a civil matter.

The report, presented Tuesday, examined how other Ontario municipalities handle cameras on private property, from doorbell devices to driveway-mounted units. It found few examples of direct regulation for privacy reasons, noting that most towns treat disputes as nuisance or civil issues between neighbours.

Staff cautioned enforcement would be difficult, as regulating camera angles could require warrants and compliance might be temporary.
