North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson’s office has offered no compelling reason for challenging a judge’s decision Friday to throw out decades-old convictions in the 2002 murder of basketball star Chris Paul’s grandfather, lawyers argued in a court filing Wednesday.

Brothers Rayshawn Banner and Nathaniel Cauthen are serving life sentences for first-degree murder and robbery with a dangerous weapon in relation to the killing of Nathaniel Jones outside his Winston-Salem home.

The attorney general’s office asked the North Carolina Court of Appeals on Tuesday to pause the dismissals while prosecutors pursued an appeal.
