Northern Guilford and Northwest Guilford have been archrivals, but the schools’ respective first-year volleyball head coaches, Teborah Hawkins-Hollingsworth and Lydia Saunders, gave each other a hug just before their season-opening match on Tuesday.
The two are coaches in the Piedmont Volleyball Club.
“I think she is super sweet,” said Northwest’s Saunders after making her high school coaching debut. “ … She has more experience in the high school realm, so we talked about that at first. It’s fun to see a familiar face in the gym. It is honestly more comforting as well. Definitely, she has prepared a strong team and she is a strong coach, so we saw that here today.”
