NORMAL ( 25News Now ) - With no outbreak in Central Illinois, people here may not be thinking about measles.

However, doctors at Illinois State University are thinking a lot about it as students arrive from all over the world for the new school year. Texas has more than 800 cases and India has over 10,000, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Many people get the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine as young children.

The CDC says, “it is uncommon for someone fully vaccinated to develop measles.”

The Illinois Department of Public Health considers measles “serious.”

State law requires most students at ISU and other public institutions to have the MMR vaccine. It’s the rare exceptions to that requirement that puts people at-risk during an outbreak. Students can get exempt
