Alcohol consumption among U.S. adults dropped to the lowest recorded level according to Gallup’s latest annual Consumption Habits survey.

In 2025, about 54% of Americans reported drinking alcohol, down from 58% in 2024 and 62% in 2023.

The big picture: The 54% figure breaks the previous record low of 55% set in 1958, marking a historic decline over nearly nine decades of Gallup’s tracking. • The average alcohol intake over the past seven days fell to 2.8 drinks, the lowest since 1996, down from 3.8 drinks last year and far below the 2003 peak of 5.1 drinks per week. • The percentage of drinkers who consumed alcohol the day before the survey reached a record low of 24%, while 40% reported abstaining for more than a week—the highest since 2000.
