United Farm Workers has been working to unionize Wasco’s Wonderful Nurseries for over a year under California’s card check law.

Now Wonderful Co. is shutting down the nursery in a move that it says is purely business.

The backstory: UFW, the union founded by Cesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta, received a green light from the state to hold secret unionization elections three years ago when California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed AB 2183 into law. • AB 2183 allows farmworkers to unionize by signing cards offsite instead of holding state-supervised elections.
