A Strasburg police officer’s firearm went off by accident in the police department’s building, the police chief confirmed Tuesday.

No injuries were reported and the officer has been assigned to administrative duty while the Virginia State Police and Shenandoah County Commonwealth’s Attorney Elizabeth Cooper investigate the incident, Chief Wayne Sager said by phone on Tuesday. Cooper did not immediately respond to an email for comment on Wednesday

The incident occurred in the early morning hours of May 21, Sager said. The discharge caused minor damage, he added.

“It’s being investigated currently,” Sager said. “I can’t speak to the details but we obviously immediately called the state police and they’re doing an independent criminal review of the incident.”
