NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A jury began deliberations Wednesday afternoon in the murder trial of Jalen Garces, the man charged with second-degree murder in the June 2023 shooting death of Ali Muhammad in Norfolk.

The jury will continue its deliberations at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.

Muhammad, 33, was shot and killed in the parking lot of his apartment complex on 1st Bay Street the night of June 29, 2023. His father, Bilal Muhammad, an outspoken activist and crusader against gun violence in Hampton Roads, testified in the trial and said he was on the phone with his son when he was shot.

Ali Muhammad was killed by a single gunshot "at contact range" in the parking lot of his apartment complex, according to the chief medical examiner, meaning the gun was pressed to his chest.
