SARASOTA, Fla. ( WWSB ) - It was 21 years ago today that the storm made landfall as a category 4 hurricane on Florida’s southwest coast, near Charlotte Harbor.

Charley caused $6.8 billion in insured losses which equates to about $13 billion in today’s dollars.

It was the second largest insured loss in U.S. history at the time behind Hurricane Andrew in 1992, with more than 600,000 insurance claims in Florida.

More than 20,000 homes were destroyed, with 15 fatalities.
