Butte-Silver Bow issued an order late Wednesday afternoon telling people below Front Street to not drink city tap water because of possible contamination due to a mix-up from Montana Resources.

Public Works Director Mark Neary said the order applies to anyone below Front Street, including those who live south of urban Butte.

People should not drink city tap water but they can shower and use the water for other purposes.

Neary said Montana Resources uses a process to wash some of its equipment and accidentally tied into one of the city’s water lines, possibly contaminating the water. It’s possible there was no contamination, he said, but Public Works crews are flushing city lines just in case.
