CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles (RMV) is alerting residents about a new text scheme impersonating the department, which falsely claims unpaid traffic tickets will lead to severe penalties.

The scheme targets RMV employees and local police departments, sending text messages that demand payment for supposed outstanding traffic tickets.
The messages threaten that failure to pay will result in being reported to the DMV, suspension of vehicle registration, and revocation of the driver's license.
