CLAY COUNTY, Fla. — A Clay County mother is facing charges after deputies say she placed a gun inside her child’s backpack, which was later discovered at Coppergate Elementary School.
According to the Clay County Sheriff’s Office, the incident happened at the start of the school day on Aug. 13, when a student opened their backpack and found the firearm. The student immediately told a teacher, who alerted school supervisors and deputies.
Authorities say the school was placed in “secure status,” allowing classes to continue while restricting entry and exit from the campus. Deputies confiscated the weapon and launched an investigation.
