Just 12 days after the departure of Robin Tyra and 18 days from the season opener, Barbour County has hired a replacement as the Jaguars’ head football coach – and it’s a familiar face.

The Barbour County School Board voted on Monday night to approve Steve Fryer as the new football coach. Fryer was the Jaguars’ head football coach in 2017 as well as the boys basketball coach for six years (2017-18 through 2022-23) and athletic director for seven years (2017-18 through 2023-24).

As basketball coach, he guided the Jaguars to a state runner-up finish in 2019-2020.

In addition to football head coach, Fryer was also named Barbour County’s athletic director, a post also vacated by Tyra, who left the program on Friday, July 31 to become the head football coach and athletic director at Abbevill
