GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — For many families, back-to-school shopping is one of the most expensive times of the year. Even with prices on some items holding steady, parents say the total adds up fast.

Brooke Elenbaas and her daughter Kensie spent Wednesday afternoon navigating crowded aisles with a school supply list in hand.

“It says three dozen sharpened pencils,” said Elenbaas, reading the list out to Kensie as she retrieved the various items. “That seems so specific.”

Elenbaas has three kids, all now in middle or high school. Over the years, she’s seen the lists get longer and the prices climb.
