CHESTER — The Philadelphia Union waited a month to play their U.S. Open Cup quarterfinal. What was another two hours thanks to more lightning and rain, then two goals scored by the visiting Red Bulls before they woke from their stupor?

Olwethu Makhanya’s goal in the 89th minute made the difference in an ill-tempered affair with the Red Bulls, a 3-2 Union victory to extend their unbeaten run against their neighbor to the north to 16 games.

The Union advance to the Sept. 16 semifinal at Nashville SC. Minnesota United and Austin FC are alive in the western half of the bracket, and the Union would travel to either of their places for a final.

The Union trailed twice Wednesday, in a game originally rained out on July 9 and then delayed two hours by storms in the area on this mid-week game. R
