Tana Beverwyk-Abouda is hoping to offer older adults a "menu of choices" to reduce their risk of falling.
For some, practicing balance might mean walking down a narrow garden path, said Beverwyk-Abouda, executive director of Bridge to Health NM, a nonprofit wellness center based in Española. For others, it might involve using a balance trainer at the gym or standing on one foot while holding onto the kitchen counter.
"People are different. People have different preferences; they are living in different situations," Beverwyk-Abouda said. "And if we expect a one size fits all approach to something like fall prevention, that's part of the reason it doesn't work."
