MARANA, AZ (AZFamily) — An Arizona couple is suing their son’s school district after he got suspended for typing up what he said was a joke email about a school shooting on his school-issued laptop that he never sent.

The parents of the Marana High School student near Tucson claim their son’s First Amendment right to free speech was violated.

According to the complaint, the unnamed student had gotten a bad grade on an assignment, so his mother suggested that he send his teacher an email to ask what he could do to raise the grade.

The teen reportedly opened his school-issued laptop and started typing and joking around with his mother, who was right next to him.
