CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, Ohio — Four of the five candidates vying to become Cleveland Heights’ next mayor say they support saving Lower Lake, opposing a new recommendation from the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District to remove its nearly two-century-old dam.

The candidates’ comments came during a Wednesday interview with cleveland.com’s editorial board, just two days after more than 75 people packed Shaker Heights City Council Chambers to hear the district outline its plan. Updated flood modeling and cost estimates, officials said, showed that keeping the dam would cost up to $55 million — nearly five times the 2021 estimate — while providing little downstream flood protection compared with removing it.
