Malawi is mourning the death of Senior Chief Kachindamoto of Dedza, celebrated nationally and internationally for her decades-long fight against child marriage and her relentless advocacy for girls’ education.

Born Teleza Chidyaonga, Kachindamoto ascended to the chieftaincy in 2003, succeeding her brother, Samson Chidyawonga. She died yesterday on 13 August 2025 in Lilongwe, her third-born son, Brunoh Ndovi, confirmed.

President Lazarus Chakwera and First Lady Monica Chakwera joined the nation in paying tribute, calling her “a true champion of girls’ rights” whose “legacy of service, courage, and dedication will continue to inspire Malawi.”
