What kind of country are we? I met recently with a woman who has a year-and-a-half-old boy and is pregnant with number two. The father was at work on a roofing project and, when he descended the ladder, immigration agents arrested him, took him to prison and plan to deport him.
His only infraction of the law in his ten years in this country was entering the country without our government’s permission, a misdemeanor, as is loitering, intoxication in public and petty theft — and less harmful to others than those crimes.
