Regarding Tony Messenger’s column “ The gerrymandering wars aren’t just a bad idea. They’re poison. ” (Aug. 8): Let's be clear about what is going on — Republicans are starting these "wars." They are doing so at the behest of a corrupt, frightened, failing president whose M.O. is chaos.

President Donald Trump is the aggressor here, demanding that Republicans deliver a big dose of this poison ahead of schedule. This mid-decade scheme is blatant, partisan cheating. Democrats have no choice but to respond in kind.

We’ve endured gerrymandering in this country for a long, long time. It is a poison, a way each side — when in power, and once a decade — has been allowed to cheat. So it is at the top of the list of things we need to flat out ban someday.
