If humor, as some people define it, is “the juxtaposition of incongruities,” then few Oklahoma-based incongruities can be juxtaposed to greater comic effect than a blue whale in the middle of a landlocked state.

At least, that was the thinking some 10 years ago, when plans for what would become the Blue Whale Comedy Festival were in their infancy.

“When we started working on the festival, downtown Tulsa wasn’t quite like it is today,” said Bailie Moellers, a portfolio marketing manager with the George Kaiser Family Foundation and one of the chairs for this year’s Blue Whale festival. “The BOK Center had recently opened, and the Guthrie Green was just starting to attract people to come downtown.
