Lufthansa is the world's largest user of passenger-configured Boeing 747s. According to ch-aviation , it has eight 747-400s and 19 747-8is. They are exclusively flown from Frankfurt, which is the airline's busiest hub. They have never had regular scheduled flights from Munich.

The German giant will gradually replace its paid-for 747-400s with incoming 777-9s . As such, they will not be refurbished. They have 371 seats : 67 in business, 32 in premium economy, and 272 in economy. In contrast, its 747-8is, which average 11.8 years against 25.3 years for the -400, will be retrofitted with Lufthansa's Allegris cabins. The variant has 364 seats : eight in first class, 80 in business, 32 in premium ecomomy, and 244 in economy.
