Today is Julia Child’s birthday—and we are celebrating it with champignons, one of her favorite vegetables. Her name is practically synonymous with French cuisine in this country, as she shared her love of food through her many cookbooks and her popular television show, “The French Chef.” Best known for her sparkling personality, her legend continues despite her death in 2004.

Born in 1912 in California, she has inspired millions of amateur cooks (as well as many professional chefs) with her skills and her relaxed kitchen spirit. She was passionate about learning, and encouraged many of us home cooks to try new recipes. Her first cooking program aired on PBS in 1963, after the completion of her groundbreaking cookbook, “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.”
