(WIFR) - Mercyhealth reaches an agreement with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission after employees argued they were discriminated against based on their religion in connection with the health system’s COVID-19 vaccine policy.

The agreement was announced Aug. 13 by the EOCC .

As part of the settlement with the EOCC, Mercyhealth agreed to pay more than $1 million in monetary relief to employees who refused the vaccine and has offered to reinstate the employees that it terminated for refusing to comply with the policy.

The EOCC says its investigation found that between September 2021 to May 2022, Mercyhealth denied employees the opportunity to request a religious accommodation if they refused the vaccine, opting instead to either terminate their employment or deduct a $60 m
